Postcards from Artists. Winter

December 9, 2021 - January 9, 2022

Rating: 6+

The exhibition features more than 200 works by contemporary artists and art groups from different generations, most of which were specifically produced for the show. By the early 20th century, New Year postcards in Russia had become an art genre with its own distinctive style that survived several wars and revolutions and lasted until the middle of the century. Many of Russia's foremost painters created those small-scale pictures, including the likes of Alexandre Benois, Ivan Bilibin, Igor Grabar, Boris Zvorykin, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, and Ilya Repin. In the early 21st century, artists taking part in the project curated by Vera Pogodina have helped breathe new life into the half-forgotten genre, which has recently become a new form of contemporary art. Given the light-hearted holiday spirit of the exhibition, the artists were free to choose scenes and subjects to their liking; and in every single case, their postcards are immediately recognizable and characteristic of their oeuvre.

The project, launched in 2008, was held for the fourteenth time and once again encompassed works by contemporary artists, most of which were specifically made for this exhibition. This year, a group of young artists, students of Vladimir Dubossarsky and Aidan Salakhova, also submitted works for the show.

Vera Pogodina's new project also features, for the first time, large-scale works, and the Postcards from Artists are made in various media such as oil on canvas, watercolour or pencil on paper, mixed media, collage, art object, photo/video art and more.

"Postcards from Artists. Winter is an attempt to revive the tradition of making one-of-a-kind New Year gifts. Every year, new artists join our project and more and more visitors come to see the show. Over the past 14 years, we have staged our Postcards from Artists shows at various museums and galleries in Moscow, from our gallery to the Literature Museum and the Shchusev Museum of Architecture to the exhibition space Cube.Moscow. This year, we were welcomed by the Ekaterina Cultural Foundation and I would like to say thank you to Ekaterina and Vladimir Semenikhin for their support. We hope that our exhibition will be a joyful occasion for all art lovers ahead of 2022," Vera Pogodina said.
